A Heartbreaking Change Just One Year Has Made in the US

In late October 2024, the landscape was utterly distinct. Before the US presidential election, considerate residents could acknowledge the country's deep flaws – its unfairness and inequality – yet they continued to identify it as the United States. A free society. A land where constitutional order held significance. A state guided by a respectable and decent public servant, even with his older age and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, countless Americans hardly identify the nation we inhabit. Persons believed to be illegal immigrants are collected and pushed into vans, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is being destroyed to build a lavish event space. Donald Trump is persecuting his adversaries or supposed enemies and insisting federal prosecutors hand over an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are dispatched into American cities with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, renamed the Department of War, has effectively rid itself of regular press examination as it spends what could amount to almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Institutions, attorney offices, journalism organizations are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are treated like members of the royal family.

“America, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the edge toward dictatorship and fascism,” an American historian, commented in August. “Ultimately, faster than I imagined possible, it occurred in America.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. It is hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – how severely declined we have become, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.

However, we understand that the president was duly elected. Despite his highly troubling initial presidency and even after the warnings that came with the knowledge of the conservative plan – following Trump himself declared plainly he intended to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – a majority of citizens chose him rather than Kamala Harris.

As terrifying as today's circumstances is, it's more frightening to recognize that we have only been three-quarters of a year into this administration. How will three more years of this deterioration leave us? And if the three years turns into an prolonged era, because there is nobody to stop this president from opting that another term is required, perhaps for security concerns?

Certainly, there is still hope. There will be congressional elections the coming year that may bring a different political equilibrium, should Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist public servants who are striving to apply a degree of oversight, such as representatives that are launching an investigation regarding the effort to money grab from legal authorities.

And a national vote in the next cycle could start us down the road to healing exactly as last year’s election put us on this unfortunate course.

We see millions of Americans demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, as they did recently at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the slumbering force of the nation is rising”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or during the sixties activism or during the seventies crisis.

On those occasions, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he recognizes the signs of that resurgence and notices it unfolding at present. As evidence, he references the widespread marches, the widespread, multi-faction opposition to a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to accept government requirements they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists asleep till some venality grows too toxic, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, some brutality so loud, that he is compelled except to rise.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may be validated.

In the meantime, the major inquiries remain: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status globally and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or should we recognize that the historical project worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts tells me that the second option is correct; that everything might be gone. My hopeful heart, however, convinces me that we must try, through all methods possible.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that involves pushing media professionals to commit, more thoroughly, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For some people, it could mean participating in congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to protect voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or in several years? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to attempt to not give up.
