Intense confrontations erupted when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.

Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Community members have compared the hillside area - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.

Mission Context

The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies follows a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.

Wider Perspective

Large-scale police operations are regular in Brazil prior to significant global gatherings in the country.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is set to occur in the city of Belem in the north in late autumn.
