Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing undesired gifts can be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off in a public auction by a Italian auction firm. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the intention is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the proceeds donated to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The items are currently stored in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.

The full gift list remains officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was presented in parliament. The question raised if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

An International Array of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from international counterparts and making Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a leader's tenure.
