Our team is verifying images and video shared earlier today that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
