The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Haze Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the capital registered an air quality index over 500, which translates to ten times the recommended limit established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times above acceptable limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as colder weather approaches.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed city government petitioned the highest court to request a easing of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Court Ruling and Implementation

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi registered air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe levels seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high readings of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

During celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted city.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The problem in the capital is caused by a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, farmers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to numerous studies.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature mortalities per year in Delhi.
