The moment is ripe to alter Man Utd's tactical setup - Ruben Amorim insists.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that changing Manchester United's tactical system due to media noise would have signaled "the end" for him.

Initially against Newcastle United, Amorim moved away from his trademark three-at-the-back setup with wing-backs and chose to deploy an standard four-man defense shielded by two holding midfielders.

By his own admission this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the closing minutes as his squad dug in for a crucial result - securing only their second-ever clean sheet of the campaign.

While he once notably stated that even the highest authority could force him to adjust his approach, Amorim maintains the capacity to experiment with varied formations has consistently been part of his strategy.

Yet, he emphasizes he could only make the switch when his team were doing at an acceptable level - or else it would look as if he was bowing to external criticism.

"At the time I arrived here the previous campaign, I understood perhaps I don't have the squad to perform effectively in that system, but it was the beginning of a journey," he stated.

"We were trying to forge an philosophy. Today is a separate moment. We are missing a lot of players, and we need be flexible, so they understand why we are changing.

"It is not because of the pressure of the media, or the fans.

"Whenever media talk about changing the formation all the time, I cannot make a change because the squad will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is a disaster for the coach.

"When we are performing strongly in our preferred setup, then is the moment to change.

"This will help us develop into a better squad because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not planning to use three defenders all the time."

Availability Crisis Continue

With just two wins in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to say his side have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, managing with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior stars already unavailable for the forthcoming fixture against winless Wolves.

That figure will grow if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be urging his boss to allow him to make a comeback following his muscle injury.

"Bruno is already telling me he has to practice," revealed Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to feature against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

The Captain's Influence Endures

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be heavily involved, as whereas most injured players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to continue providing insight.

"He is a natural leader," he declared. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has negative aspects at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he recovers, he heads to watch the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he wants my job or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Key Personnel

Although the specific date for the captain's comeback - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, by the end of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
