They're Doing to America What They Performed within Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and defining instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the US president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – really, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of animosity who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense of him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.

The evident and straightforward truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of extreme compassion centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Best Among Us

So I have been inspired to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump develop over the last twelve months.
